Have you ever been in a point in your life when you were completely at peace with everything that’s going on? I think most of us worry about our future, our job, our family and kids, finances, and the list can go on forever. Even if you go on an extravagant, all-expenses-paid vacation, you’d still have things in the back of your mind that stress and concern you back home.
Do we really know what true peace is? I’m not talking about when we hear beauty pageant contestants say they want world peace, jewelry with peace symbols on them, or political leaders calling for peace among countries. I’m talking about the peace that we cannot understand with our natural minds; peace that quiets the voices in our heads; peace that allows us to hear God’s voice.
Our lives are full of distractions and chaos, even when we don’t know it. So many times in my life I’ve thought I was on a “good path” until something happened and I’d start worrying and panicking over it. I think it’s important for us to realize that we have access to God’s peace whenever we want it as believers in Jesus.
The Bible says we have the fruits of the Spirit when walk in the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-25) Therefore, we possess everything He has to offer. When we feel overwhelmed or defeated, we can “activate” the peace that’s already inside of us. The enemy will try, and a lot of times succeed, in making us think we have to ask for more peace because he’s taken it from us. That’s a lie. He cannot take anything we have. If he did, he’d possess the fruits of the Spirit – which he hates. He is NOT love, he is NOT joy, he is NOT peace, so how can he possess them? He has no power over us! He can deceive us into thinking we don’t possess them anymore by suppressing them. He amplifies chaos and confusion and suppresses our peace, but he cannot take it from us.
We don’t have to go around praying for the Lord to give us more love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. We possess those aspects of who God is. We have to learn to tune into what we have and put them into practice when we need them. I’m in a situation in my life right now where I need the peace that He gave me. When I start to hear the lies of the enemy, I know that the Prince of Peace is my God. I know that I possess the “peace that surpasses all understanding.” (Philippians 4: 7)
The enemy is deathly afraid of peace because he is chaos and disorder. He’s goal is to “steal, kill and destroy” (John 10:10) everything in your life, and your mind is one of those things. He’ll speak lies and deceive you. He’ll contradict everything God has said and everything you’ve learned about who God is. His goal is to confuse you. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” He cannot stand when we walk in peace because he can’t combat it. Everything he tries gets shot down by peace.
Our minds don’t understand the peace that comes from God. Our flesh is telling us to worry, stress, doubt and fear, but our spirit is saying to “be still and know He is God.” (Psalms 46:11) It’s a lot easier said than done, but I encourage you, if you’re going through something that has caused chaos, confusion and disorder in your life to proclaim peace in your life. Don’t let the enemy make you think he’s taken anything from you. You have authority and power over him, and he has to bow to the One living in you.
“Do not be anxious about anything – but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the shalom (peace) of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus).” Philippians 4:6-7 TLV
