Learning To Fight

I absolutely love watching war movies. Anything about the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World Wars 1 and 2, Vietnam – you name it. I love history and enjoy seeing how our men and women fight for what’s ours and bravely give up their lives just so we can be free. Both of my grandfathers were in the army, so the military has a special place in my heart.

While watching these movies, I always pay attention to how the generals and commanders plan their attacks. Like in the movie Pearl Harbor, after the U.S. was attacked, they planned a surprise attack on Japan in return. They created a special team and trained them on how to sneak up on the enemy.

Just like the men and women that fight here in the natural realm for our freedom, it is vital that we learn how to fight and sneak up on the enemy in the spirit realm as well. I’ve never been the type of person to intentionally cause fights or stir up tension among people. I enjoy peace and everyone getting along. However, if it has to do with the spirit realm, I will fight harder than anyone.

Everything we face in this life has a spiritual meaning behind it. Whether it’s addictions, abuse, temptations, desires, or any trial or obstacle we come across, everything has a deeper root behind it. Elementarily speaking, there are good spirits and bad spirits. I think we all know this. Distinguishing between the two is how you win. The enemy’s goal is to ruin your perception of who God is and who you are in Him.

The Bible says in Ephesians 6 to put on the armor of God. If you grew up like I did, then you learned this as a young child. You may have even sung the song, “I’m in the Lord’s Army” (don’t forget the “Yes, Sir!”) a billion times. You learned the exact pieces of the armory and where they go, but as adults we forget them. We read the part that says to put the armor on, but we forget a major part.

Never take it off.

The Bible clearly states to put it on, but never says to remove it. You don’t have to keep putting on the armor everyday if you’ve never taken it off. If you feel like you are being attacked in a certain area, check your armor. If you’re hearing lies, check to make sure you have on the belt of truth. If your integrity and morals are being challenged, check your breastplate of righteousness. Make sure your feet are prepared to spread the gospel at any time and stand firm in it.

The shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit are two of the pieces of armor that require an action. It won’t do you much good to just hold them. You have to defend yourself with the shield and attack with the sword. When we walk in faith and declare the Word of God, then we will win every time.

By always having the armor on, you know the enemy’s plan before you’re even attacked. Satan has been using the same tactics since the beginning of time – depression, anxiety, stress, doubt, fear, temptation, lies, manipulation, etc. You know you can beat him with declaring God’s truth and walking in faith. He’s a counterfeit of truth and a mere wanna-be. He’s got NOTHING on the God in you. You know who you are in Christ because of the helmet of salvation that you wear.

Wherever you are being attacked, is where you will see breakthrough. You know you’re in your promise land if the enemy is trying to kick you out. Fight for what’s yours! Drive Satan out all the way. Freedom is yours. You are not a slave to bondage anymore. You can be set free from addiction or a lifestyle that’s not pleasing to the Lord. It’s your God-given, Jesus-paid right. Salvation is yours. Jesus bought you on the cross and nailed every demon to that same cross. Authority and power were given over to us on that day.

In Nehemiah 4, the Jews are rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. Their enemies were trying to stop them. The Bible says they kept one hand on their work and one hand holding a weapon. I believe that’s how we have to live everyday. With one hand in the physical and one hand in the spirit.

One of the biggest enemies of the followers of Jesus is fear. We get so scared of what people will think of us if we tell them what we believe. We’ve become so politically correct that we think we have to tolerate unbiblical behavior so people will like us instead of standing up for God’s morals and standards. Fear will back you into a corner and keep you from being who God made you to be. Fear is an evil being that we, as followers of Jesus, need to know how to battle.

So, I challenge you to start walking in the authority that has been given to you. Never take off your armor, and fight for what’s yours. Don’t give up. Jesus went through too much for you to forget who you are. Sneak up on the enemy by always being prepared for what he tries to throw your way. Live everyday knowing there is more to life than what you see in front of you.

You’ve got this!

We serve a mighty God, and there’s NOTHING impossible with Him!
